Google has announced a new Gmail update that aims to enhance the search functionality within the email platform. The update utilizes AI to prioritize emails based on factors like recency, most-clicked emails, and frequent contacts when displaying search results.

Previously, Gmail sorted emails chronologically based on keywords.

The update is designed to save users time by presenting the most relevant emails at the top of search results, making it easier to find important information. Additionally, Google has introduced a toggle for users to switch between viewing “Most relevant” or “Most recent” emails in search results.

The update is currently available for personal Google account users on the web and Gmail app for Android and iOS, with plans to expand to business users in the future.

Google’s efforts to enhance Gmail come in response to competition from Apple’s Mail app, which received Gmail-like features in iOS 18. Gmail has recently introduced features like adding events to Google Calendar from emails and “Summary cards” for actions within the inbox.

Users can also chat with Gemini about their inbox directly within the Gmail app on iOS and Android.
