German startup wins accolade for its fusion reactor design

Proxima Fusion, a startup based in Germany, has unveiled plans for a functional fusion power plant in a peer-reviewed journal, marking a significant advancement in the pursuit of sustainable energy.

Unlike traditional nuclear fission reactors that produce radioactive waste, fusion reactors like the one proposed by Proxima Fusion generate energy with zero carbon emissions and minimal radiation.

The ‘Stellaris’ design developed by Proxima Fusion aims to address the stability issues associated with other fusion reactor designs, such as tokamaks and stellarators. By leveraging external magnets, the Stellaris concept promises improved reliability and continuous operation.

Dr. Francesco Sciortino, the CEO of Proxima Fusion, emphasized the company’s commitment to transparent and collaborative science by sharing their research in a public forum like ‘Fusion Engineering and Design’.

With significant funding from the European Union, the German government, and venture capital firms, Proxima Fusion is on track to achieve its goal of constructing a fully functional fusion reactor by 2031, positioning itself as a key player in the global race for commercial fusion energy.

Competing against other innovative companies in the field, Proxima Fusion’s early success and accelerated timeline demonstrate the potential for QI-HTS stellarators to lead the way in the future of fusion technology.
