From manifesto to material: What No. 10 needs to make reality
The most recent Labour government was in power 14 years ago, and the landscape of cyber security has drastically changed since then. In the past, simply having a firewall and antivirus software was considered sufficient protection against threats. However, with our increasing reliance on technology for communication, it is clear that the internet now plays a crucial role in business operations.
Today, the risks faced by organizations and companies are far greater than they were a decade ago. Ransomware, which was once just a prediction, has now become a reality. As we look towards the future, here are some key areas that the new administration should focus on in the realm of cyber security.
Working together to take down criminals
International cooperation is essential in combating cyber criminals who operate across borders. The new government, under Keir Starmer’s leadership, is already making efforts to strengthen relationships with organizations like NATO and the EU. By working together, we can extradite individuals and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to tackle cyber threats effectively.
The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill announced in the King’s Speech is a step towards bolstering the UK’s defenses against cyber-attacks. This legislation aims to address vulnerabilities, expand the NIS regime, and invest in cyber security infrastructure and capabilities.
Working with big tech
In a world dominated by surveillance capitalism, it is crucial for the government to hold tech giants accountable for their handling of personal data. The fragmented nature of identity verification in the digital age poses a significant challenge for cyber security. It is essential for the new administration to regulate and monitor the activities of government, companies, and big tech to protect individual privacy.
Tackling cross-border cyber warfare
The issue of proxy groups carrying out cyber attacks on behalf of governments presents a complex challenge. Western democracies like the UK adhere to certain values, but cyber criminals may not abide by the same rules. Efforts to regulate and manage these activities are necessary, and initiatives like the ICRC’s rules of engagement for civilian hackers are a step in the right direction.
Matching ardour with ability
It is essential for the government to have the right expertise in place to effectively address cyber security challenges. The new administration appears to be appointing individuals with relevant skills and experience to key roles. Setting realistic expectations and implementing measures that are feasible for organizations will be crucial in achieving long-term success in cyber security.
