Foodora tests drone and robot deliveries in Sweden

Foodora Norway, the Oslo-based subsidiary of online Q-commerce food delivery brand Foodora Group, has teamed up with Nordic communications company Tele2 to test home deliveries using robots and drones supported by 5G IoT technology.

The Stockholm metropolitan area was chosen for the ground robot and drone delivery trials. The Doora robot will be used in the ground tests, while the drone trials are part of the parallel Foodora Air project.

Foodora, a subsidiary of Berlin-based Delivery Hero, operates in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, delivering restaurant food, groceries, and other goods using cars and bicycles. The company also operates in Austria, Hungary, and Czechia.

The collaboration with Tele2 is part of Foodora’s two-year plan to introduce GPS-based robot home deliveries across the Nordic countries by 2025 and 2026. The joint venture with Tele2 focuses on self-driving robots and drones connected to 5G and IoT technologies.

Foodora aims to launch commercial Doora ground robot deliveries in Sweden and Norway by the end of 2025, with drone services to follow in 2026.

CEO Prashant Søegaard mentioned that Scandinavian countries are behind the US and Finland in self-driving robot food delivery services. The partnership with Tele2 in Sweden will help identify opportunities and challenges in implementing robot deliveries across Nordic markets.

In Finland, S-Group partnered with Starship Technologies to deploy autonomous S-Market delivery robots, with plans to expand the service to more locations.

Mobile app

The Starship Robot platform has delivered 150,000 orders to households in Finland. The service, accessed through S-Market’s mobile app, is available in 14 towns and cities, with plans for further expansion.

Starship Technologies, founded by Skype co-founders, operates in San Francisco, Tallinn, and Helsinki.

Foodora’s trials of the Doora ground robot in Sweden include testing its navigation and communication capabilities.

Test and evaluation

The Doora and Foodora Air projects will assess the potential of delivery systems connected to Tele2’s 5G network and IoT technology. The goal is to optimize GPS and IoT functions for efficient delivery management.

The Doora ground robot can carry up to 20kg, with a top speed of 6km per hour and a battery life of eight hours. The Foodora Air project focuses on testing battery-powered drones for meal deliveries in Stockholm.

Nimbi drones used by Foodora Air can operate within a 21km range and have a payload capacity of 4kg. The drones are integrated into Foodora Air’s platform for efficient delivery.

Results from the trials in Sweden will guide the rollout of drone and robot delivery services in Norway, with a focus on overcoming regulatory hurdles and ensuring safe operations.

Foodora aims to introduce robot delivery services in Norway in collaboration with Holo, a Danish autonomous vehicle company.

Recent partnerships with Holo and Posten have led to pilot tests of delivery robots in Oslo, showcasing the potential for autonomous delivery services in Norway.
