Flossing teeth can expose you to toxic chemicals — 3 safe brands

It is recommended to floss at least once a day to maintain good oral hygiene and reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.
However, not all flosses are created equal. A study found traces of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in 13 out of 39 floss brands.
These PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” can make flossing easier but have been linked to health issues and can persist in the body and the environment.
PFAS can be found in various everyday products, including dental floss, so it’s important to limit exposure when possible.
Experts recommend choosing PFAS-free floss made from natural fibers like silk or cotton and coated with plant-based waxes like beeswax, candelilla, or carnauba.
Consumer Reports and Made Safe have identified three PFAS-free flosses that are recommended for oral health.
Nudge offers a silk floss that is biodegradable and comes in a glass container, providing a safe and eco-friendly flossing option.
Radius also offers a PFAS-free floss spun in candelilla wax and coated in carnauba wax, with plastic-free packaging for sustainability.
TreeBird’s floss is waxed with candelilla and made from pure peace silk, packaged in a glass container and recycled cardboard box for eco-conscious consumers.
