Final Fantasy 14 Mobile is in the works at Tencent
The popular MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 is set to make its way to mobile devices through a forthcoming port developed by Tencent.
Final Fantasy 14 Mobile will offer a new “mobile-friendly format” while maintaining the core gameplay elements of the original game. Details are currently limited, but both combat and non-combat features will be included in the mobile version, as well as visual enhancements like weather effects.
Similar to other mobile adaptations, it seems that players will have the option to enjoy Final Fantasy 14 Mobile as an alternative to the main game, with the press release mentioning that “veteran players can revisit familiar experiences in a new format, while newcomers can explore the world of Eorzea for the first time.” Although a release date has not been announced yet, the game will initially launch in China before expanding to other regions.
“It has been 11 years since FF14 2.0: A Realm Reborn was introduced, and this new mobile game will serve as a companion to FF14, aiming to capture the essence of the original game’s story and combat mechanics on mobile devices,” stated game director Naoki Yoshida in a press release.
Tencent is a prominent player in the mobile gaming industry, not only producing first-party titles but also collaborating on mobile adaptations of popular games like PUBG Mobile (developed in conjunction with Krafton), Black Desert Online, and Call of Duty: Mobile.
While the original Final Fantasy 14 MMO was initially exclusive to PC and faced criticism, it has since expanded to other platforms over the years. Square Enix and PlayStation have had a long-standing partnership with several console exclusives, leading to its availability on PlayStation consoles. Recently, Square Enix brought the game to Xbox Series X/S and announced plans to release more titles on Xbox in the future. With the mobile adaptation in the works, the Nintendo Switch remains the only major gaming console without access to the MMO.
Notably, Final Fantasy 14 supports cross-platform play, allowing users to connect with friends regardless of their chosen platform. While it is unclear if this feature will extend to the mobile version, the differences in gameplay experience between touchscreen controls and traditional controllers make it unlikely. Other Tencent games such as Call of Duty: Mobile do not support cross-platform play between consoles or PC, although it is available on both iOS and Android.
