EU iPhone users are getting another exclusive perk with iOS 18.4

The iOS 18.4 update is currently in beta testing and includes a new feature for users in the EU to set a default navigation app. This means that links will no longer automatically open in Apple Maps if you prefer to use Google Maps. Unfortunately, this feature will not be available to users in the U.S.

The EU’s Digital Markets Act is pushing Apple to make changes to its services, but not all of these changes apply globally. Apple has expressed its disagreement with many of the EU’s regulations and only implements changes when required. This has led to some features, such as choosing an alternative app marketplace and contactless payment app, being limited to the EU.

According to MacRumors, the upcoming iOS 18.4 update will introduce the option to set a default navigation app globally. Additionally, iOS 18 already allows users to change their default browser, calls, email, keyboards, messages, and passwords apps. The ability to set a default translation app will also be available worldwide with the release of iOS 18.4.

While there are benefits to being an Apple user in the EU, such as the new Default Apps settings, there are also drawbacks. For example, Apple Intelligence features take longer to be approved for release in Europe, and the iPhone Mirroring feature is still unavailable on macOS for EU users.

I check the iPhone Mirroring feature nearly every week — just in case — but I’m always disappointed. Willow Roberts / DailyTech
