Epic’s never-ending Fortnite lawsuits are exhausting

Despite Epic’s legal battles with major corporations like Apple and Google over revenue sharing, I find it hard to care about the ongoing lawsuits. Four years ago, Epic intentionally violated the terms of the Apple App Store and Google Play Store to sell Fortnite V-bucks without paying the 30 percent cut. While Epic achieved some victories in various lawsuits, including opening up the iOS platform in Europe, the company continues to pursue legal action.

In the latest lawsuit against Google and Samsung, Epic claims that Samsung’s Auto Blocker feature makes side-loading Android games too difficult. Epic argues that disabling this feature is a cumbersome process, calling it “exceptionally onerous” and accusing Google and Samsung of engaging in illegal anticompetitive behavior.

While I acknowledge that Google, Samsung, and Apple have their own questionable practices, Epic’s aggressive legal actions seem more about maximizing profits than fighting for consumer rights. With billions in revenue from Fortnite and licensing fees for the Unreal engine, Epic is far from an underdog in the industry.

What bothers me most is Epic’s self-righteous attitude and manipulation of public opinion, especially targeting children with its messaging. While Epic avoids suing console giants like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo for similar revenue sharing practices, it continues to involve the public in its corporate battles.

In the end, Epic’s actions come off as a corporate power play rather than a noble fight for justice. The company’s attempts to rally support from players, particularly children, only add to the exhaustion of watching these legal battles unfold.
