After undergoing many changes, Dune: Prophecy is finally ready for its debut as HBO’s new sci-fi series. Serving as a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s films, the official trailer offers a glimpse into the world centuries before Paul Atreides’ birth.

Dune has been a highly successful blockbuster in recent years and a critically acclaimed sci-fi adaptation. It comes as no surprise that Warner Bros. is not planning to depart from the Dune universe anytime soon. Before the third film about Paul and his family hits the screens, this HBO series will delve into events that took place thousands of years earlier.

Initially rumored to be titled Dune: The Sisterhood, the show was officially renamed Dune: Prophecy in November 2023.

Dune: Prophecy plot

Frank Herbert wrote six novels in the Dune universe, exploring the destiny of Paul Atreides, his descendants, and the planet Arrakis. After the author’s passing, his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson continued his work by creating a series of prequels and sequels to the main series about Paul.

Dune: Prophecy is based on the book Sisterhood of Dune, published by the writing duo in 2012. It narrates the origin tale of one of the most significant political forces in the Dune universe, the Bene Gesserit order.

According to the information released about the prequel, the HBO series will focus on the rise of this ancient organization with a complex agenda. Dune: Prophecy is set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ birth. The main characters will be sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen, who establish a secret, female-only sect to safeguard the future of humanity.

The first Dune movie featured two members of the Bene Gesserit: Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam and Lady Jessica. Dune: Part Two introduced Lady Margot Fenring. Dune: Prophecy will introduce more members of the Bene Gesserit and delve deeper into their plans to breed the Kwisatz Haderach, a powerful being and messiah of the universe.
