Disco Elysium-inspired RPG Hollow Home is a memory of Mariupol from before Russia's invasion

The city of Mariupol in Ukraine was heavily bombarded during the initial months of Russia’s invasion in 2022, resulting in significant damage to residential buildings and the displacement of thousands of people. After almost two years of Russian occupation, the city has undergone extensive reconstruction and renaming, erasing much of its Ukrainian heritage, as reported by the Associated Press.

Inspired by Disco Elysium, the RPG Hollow Home serves as a tribute to pre-war Mariupol, capturing its essence through details, colors, personalities, and familiar landmarks. Developed shortly after the city’s occupation, the game is based on journalistic coverage of the invasion but presents a fictional narrative. Players take on the role of 14-year-old Maksym, navigating the challenges of survival and aiding others in the midst of the conflict.

Hollow Home features a unique gameplay experience, devoid of combat and graphic violence, focusing instead on the civilian perspective of war and the impact on neighborhoods as residents face devastation and displacement. The narrative unfolds over 30 in-game days, offering a poignant reflection on the changes brought about by the conflict.

With a pen-and-paper RPG style and vibrant graphic novel aesthetics, Hollow Home echoes the essence of ZA/UM’s game while presenting a somber and respectful portrayal of Mariupol’s plight. Through character-driven storytelling, the game delves into the evolving dynamics of the city and its inhabitants amidst the turmoil of war.

Players guide Maksym through daily activities using action points, focusing on tasks like cooking and first aid based on character traits. As the narrative progresses, players navigate a community on the brink of change, as rumors of conflict loom and relationships are tested in the face of uncertainty.

“Hollow Home” presents a dynamic narrative where choices shape the outcome, offering multiple endings and approximately 24 hours of gameplay across different districts of the city. The game aims to capture the essence of a typical Ukrainian city, showcasing the resilience and struggles of its inhabitants amidst adversity.

While reflecting on the game’s portrayal of Mariupol’s tragedy, it raises questions about the juxtaposition of real-world events and commercial entertainment. Scheduled for release in 2025, “Hollow Home” offers a unique perspective on war and survival, inviting players to engage with a narrative that transcends traditional gaming conventions.
