Dem Rep. Mikie Sherrill floats ‘trifecta’ of Trump impeachments — as she runs for NJ gov

Rep. Mikie Sherrill recently suggested that a third impeachment of President Trump might be necessary to counter Republicans after the 2026 midterms and boost support for her gubernatorial run in New Jersey.
“I think you have to test yourself. I think it’s not enough to take on one tough fight. I think there’s a lot of tough fights going on,” Sherrill (D-NJ) shared with supporters at an event in Manchester Township on April 26.
During the event, Sherrill mentioned her previous impeachment efforts against the President, hinting at a possible third impeachment. One attendee even suggested, “Do it again,” to which Sherrill responded with, “Maybe we’ll go for the trifecta.”
Sherrill’s remarks came after Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker called for mass protests and disruptions to combat Republican policies, hinting at a potential 2028 presidential bid.
In addition, Rep. Shri Thanedar filed seven articles of impeachment against Trump for various alleged offenses, including failing to facilitate the return of a deported gang member and bypassing congressional authorization for federal programs.
Sherrill is currently engaged in a tough Democratic primary battle for the New Jersey gubernatorial race against competitors like Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.
Internal polls from both Sherrill’s and her competitor’s campaigns show a close race, with Sherrill leading by a small margin in some polls.
The New Jersey Democratic primary is scheduled for June 10, with Sherrill emphasizing her focus on making life more affordable for New Jersey residents and protecting their rights and freedoms.
Sherrill also discussed the importance of state-led efforts to counter Trump’s agenda and ensure the protection of democratic values.
“It’s up to, again, all of us to make sure that we are there, mobilizing, bringing people together as he’s trying to divide us apart, finding ways around and, kind of, to block and tackle in the states,” Sherrill stated.
Despite Trump’s hints at a potential third term, Sherrill remains focused on defending democracy and fighting against any attempts to undermine the election system.
Reps for Sherrill’s gubernatorial campaign have not responded to requests for comment.
