Delhi airport to begin trails for full body scanners in May, ET TravelWorld

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) will begin trials of full-body scanners at Indira Gandhi International Airport in May 2025, following the latest directive from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). Two scanners have been installed at Terminals 1 and 3.

The scanners utilize millimeter-wave technology in the 70–80 GHz range, providing a non-invasive, radiation-free method of screening passengers. These scanners are safe for all travelers, including pregnant individuals and those with medical implants, unlike traditional X-ray machines.

The machines can detect both metallic and non-metallic threats, such as concealed explosives. Each scan lasts about three seconds, with a maximum capacity of 1,200 scans per hour, reducing wait times significantly during peak travel periods.

To address privacy concerns, the scanners generate a generic 2D image using a preset human avatar, with no personal images stored. Equipped with touchscreen monitors for passenger guidance and image analysis, the systems can accommodate a height range from 3.3 to 6.7 feet.

The trial period will span three to four months, with a BCAS-led evaluation committee assessing operational effectiveness and privacy safeguards before formulating a Standard Operating Procedure for broader deployment.

DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar expressed that the initiative aligns with the goal of enhancing security while ensuring a seamless passenger experience. The scanners comply with safety and data protection standards, with scan data accessible only to authorized agencies.

The introduction of these systems underscores Delhi Airport’s ongoing investment in technology to enhance airport operations and safety.
