Delegation Gone Wrong – Small Business Bonfire

Have you seen the image below? Take a moment to look at it. Now that you’ve had a good laugh, let’s discuss why this situation occurred.

This photo went viral on social networks and online platforms recently. It’s no surprise, considering it involves a well-known national brand. My assumption is that a person, likely earning minimum wage, was assigned the task of “putting up a sign.” This individual probably had some computer skills but may have lacked oversight.

We often see junior team members given tasks without proper supervision, leading to questionable results. In the realm of social media, it’s not uncommon for interns to manage Twitter and Facebook accounts because they are deemed experts in that field.

Early in my career, I was taught that the most crucial person in a company is the receptionist. This puzzled me initially, as I believed the Managing Director held that title. However, I was informed otherwise.

The receptionist is the initial point of contact for all visitors and callers, possessing the power to make a lasting impression or create dissatisfaction. This makes them the most important individual in the building.

When we delegate seemingly insignificant tasks that we deem beneath us, are we truly benefiting ourselves as leaders?

I’m not suggesting avoiding delegation altogether. However, it’s essential to consider tasks that can significantly impact your business, potentially leading to negative outcomes. Whether it’s crafting copy for a newspaper ad, creating a shop window sign, or managing your Twitter account, these tasks can easily escalate into PR crises or embarrassing situations.

Therefore, before passing off a simple task, contemplate the potential outcomes. Consider the level of oversight required to ensure a successful outcome.
