In summary: Dasung, the company known for its innovative e-ink products, has recently unveiled the Paperlike 103, a new portable display. This 10.3-inch screen stands out for its 60Hz refresh rate, a significant improvement compared to traditional e-ink screens.

While e-ink displays offer advantages over LCD models, they typically have refresh rates ranging from 10Hz to 40Hz. The Paperlike 103’s 60Hz refresh rate is a notable feature, especially in a market where gaming monitors are pushing refresh rates to 750Hz.

The Paperlike 103 boasts a resolution of 1,872 x 1,404 and a 4:3 aspect ratio. It also includes a dual-tone front light with adjustable settings for warm, cool, and mixed lighting to reduce eye strain during prolonged use.

Other features of the Paperlike 103 include Auto-Clear technology to minimize ghosting, capacitive touch support, and a slim aluminum alloy body. Physical buttons allow users to adjust brightness and power the screen on and off.

Connectivity options include Type-C, enabling connection to computers, phones, and other devices. The display supports Windows and Linux platforms, as well as different screen modes like mirroring and extending. The price of the Paperlike 103 is reported to be 1,999 yuan, equivalent to $273.

E-ink displays, with their paper-like appearance and lack of blue light emission, are ideal for reading. They consume minimal power as they only use energy during screen updates, are glare-free, and offer excellent visibility outdoors.

While color e-ink monitors are available, their color accuracy still falls short of traditional monitors. Lower resolutions and lack of backlighting can make them challenging to use in dim environments.

Increasing e-ink monitors’ refresh rates to 60Hz could drive greater adoption. The Dasung Paperlike 103 is not the first to offer this feature, as the Modos Paper Monitor from the previous year also achieved a 60Hz refresh rate.

Dasung made headlines in 2023 with the world’s first color e-ink monitor priced at $1,650. A year later, they introduced a portable version for $850.
