Crossbow killing suspect in hospital as U.K. mulls tighter laws – National
A man suspected of using a crossbow to kill the wife and daughters of a BBC radio sports commentator was found injured in a cemetery, 15 miles away from the crime scene. He is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Kyle Clifford, the suspect, was located in the Enfield area after a day-long search following the attack on Carol Hunt, 61, and her daughters Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25, in Bushey. Despite efforts to save them, all three victims were declared dead at the scene.
After a thorough search, Clifford, 26, was found near his home in north London. He was seen being carried on a stretcher out of Lavender Hill Cemetery, surrounded by armed police officers, forensic experts, and ambulance personnel.
Authorities did not disclose how Clifford sustained his injuries, emphasizing that no shots were fired. As of now, he has not been formally arrested.
Detective Inspector Justine Jenkins from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit stated, “Following extensive inquiries, the suspect has been located, and no other individuals are being sought in connection with the investigation at this time.”
Authorities have not disclosed the connection between Clifford and the victims but believe the attack was targeted. Reports suggest that Clifford was a former boyfriend of one of the victims.
Jenkins mentioned that the investigation is progressing rapidly, and formal identification of the victims is pending.
The BBC confirmed that the victims were related to their sports commentator John Hunt, known for his coverage of events like the Grand National and The Derby.
Residents expressed shock by leaving flowers at the scene. Su Kehinde, a neighbor, described the victims as a gentle and kind family, saying, “They were beautiful souls who did not deserve this tragedy.”
In the UK, owning a crossbow does not require a license, but carrying one in public without a valid reason is illegal.
The new Labour Party government has pledged to review the regulations on crossbow ownership promptly. Security Minister Dan Jarvis mentioned that Home Secretary Yvette Cooper will assess the situation and make necessary decisions in the near future.
Notably, crossbows have been used in several notable crimes in recent years, including an incident at Windsor Castle where an individual attempted to harm the Queen. The perpetrator was sentenced to prison for the offense.
