Countries who feel neighbours may have chance to become UNSC member oppose its expansion: India

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) expressed dissatisfaction with the slow progress on Security Council reform, highlighting opposition from countries that prefer the status quo. During a discussion at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish emphasized the need for reform to reflect current global realities.

Harish covered a wide range of global issues during his keynote address, including reformed multilateralism, terrorism, demography, India’s digital revolution, climate change, and healthcare. He acknowledged the UN’s humanitarian and development efforts but noted that public perception often focuses on its inability to prevent conflicts in regions like Ukraine and the Middle East.

While there is consensus on the need for Security Council reform, Harish highlighted challenges posed by countries reluctant to give up their permanent member status or veto power. He described the reform process as complex and urged decisive action to move it forward.

Harish emphasized the importance of adapting multilateral institutions to current challenges and opportunities, noting that the post-World War II structures are outdated. He stressed the need for a multilateral system that is effective in addressing today’s issues.

Summarizing the “India way,” Harish described a proactive approach focused on engagement, managing partnerships, and expanding outreach. He emphasized the importance of adapting to meet the aspirations of a young population and positioning India as a bridge between the developed and developing worlds.
