Confusion and backlash over City of Edmonton’s neighbourhood renewal plans - Edmonton

Residents in Edmonton’s Dunluce neighborhood are expressing concern and confusion over the renewal projects, leading to frustration among some residents.

People living in Dunluce are losing faith in the city after discussions in a recent city council meeting.

During the meeting, city council talked about project development guidelines, prompted by reports of issues in other renewal projects.

Councilor Tim Cartmell mentioned the need to address tangled issues and conflicting requests from stakeholders regarding active transportation pathways and residential streets.

Janina Syrnyk leads a group of Dunluce neighbors opposed to certain proposed changes, such as sidewalk widening and street parking reduction.

Syrnyk expressed frustration at the lack of response to their concerns despite months of complaints.

The multi-million-dollar plan for Dunluce includes upgrades like improved park benches, traffic-calming measures, and expanded multi-use paths, which some residents find unnecessary.

Despite resident objections, City Councillor Erin Rutherford stated that the project will proceed with modifications to meet city standards.

The city assured that final designs for renewals will consider a balance of guidelines and resident feedback, aiming for connectivity and accessibility in alignment with the City Plan.

The statement added that the design for Dunluce is not unique, as similar designs can be found throughout the City. A report will be presented at an upcoming Urban Planning Committee meeting, analyzing how the city upgrades neighborhoods.
