Comcast introduces ultra-low lag internet for gamers and streamers
Comcast has just announced the launch of a new Internet service with ultra-low latency, specifically designed for gaming and video conferencing. Xfinity Internet users can expect significantly reduced lag during FaceTime calls, VR headset usage, and improved performance on various games available on Steam.
Although initially limited, Comcast plans to expand the low-latency service as more content providers start supporting the technology. Emily Waldorf, SVP of Consumer Products at Comcast Connectivity and Platforms, emphasized the importance of lower lag times in today’s real-time and interactive applications, stating that Xfinity Internet’s reduced latency will set Comcast apart from competitors.
This service could greatly benefit the competitive gaming community, where lag can be a major drawback. Games that require split-second reactions, such as fighting games and shooters, can be significantly impacted by latency, potentially giving an unfair advantage to players with lower lag.
While playing against someone on the same machine results in virtually no lag, online gameplay can often suffer from latency issues. This is why many fighting game tournaments prefer in-person matches over online play, although developers are continuously working on improving online gaming experiences through technologies like rollback netcode.
If Xfinity’s new service lives up to its promises, players may experience more frame-perfect maneuvers, particularly for those skilled enough to execute them.
The technology has been in testing for the past year and is now being rolled out in select cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, with plans for expansion to more locations in the future. Users will need an XB6, XB7, or XB8 model of the Xfinity Gateway to access the service, which is expected to be compatible with more modems over time.
This technology has the potential to significantly enhance the online gaming experience by addressing one of the main challenges faced by gamers – latency.
