Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sets forth in April

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set to launch on April 24, 2025. This stunning RPG will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a day one release on Xbox Game Pass.

We had the opportunity to visit French studio Sandfall Interactive during the Xbox Developer_Direct showcase to get a glimpse of their latest game. While not a traditional JRPG due to its non-Japanese origins, Clair Obscur draws inspiration from the subgenre, blending it with a fantasy world set in Belle Epoque France to deliver a unique turn-based RPG experience.

The game follows a doomed expedition as they strive to stop the Paintress from ending the lives of people of a specific age. The Paintress emerged 67 years ago alongside a monolith, waking annually to paint a new number that signifies the end of those individuals. Each year, a new expedition sets out to combat this existential threat while grappling with loss and grief.

The expedition consists of four members. Gustave and Lune are dedicated to the mission but often clash. Sciel has faced adversity, while Miel seeks purpose in her life.

In addition to the main crew, players will encounter unique Gestral NPC Monoco, with a monkey-like body and a flat rectangular face. Esquie, an ancient character, can serve as a mount to explore new regions.

The game features a 3D overworld map reminiscent of classic JRPGs like early Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles.

Clair Obscur emphasizes turn-based RPG combat with innovative elements such as active QTE mechanics for attacks, timed blocks, counters, and Persona-style menus for characters. Players can rely on items and character builds if they struggle with timed blocks.

Character customization offers depth, with each character having 20 active skills and numerous passive abilities. Players can experiment to find the optimal playstyle for their preferences.
