Charles Koch Says Many in the Country Are ‘Abandoning’ Its Principles

Charles Koch, the billionaire industrialist and conservative megadonor, appeared in public on Thursday evening, urging libertarians to uphold their principles in a political landscape dominated by President Trump. Koch, a former influential figure in Republican politics, has seen his power diminish since Trump’s election in 2016. Despite this, he made a rare appearance in Washington to accept an award from the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank he helped establish almost 50 years ago. In his acceptance speech, Koch emphasized the importance of staying true to core principles, especially in the face of policies that contradict libertarian values, such as tariffs.

In a departure from the optimistic tone of many conservatives, Koch criticized past subsidies and protectionism, attributing current challenges to the abandonment of fundamental principles. He highlighted the detrimental effects of straying from these principles, emphasizing the importance of upholding freedoms. Despite his disagreements with President Trump, Koch’s political group announced a campaign to support the renewal of Trump’s tax cuts. However, Koch’s efforts to influence the Republican Party’s direction have faced resistance, as seen in his unsuccessful endorsement of Nikki Haley in the 2024 election.

At almost 90 years old, Charles Koch remains vocal and active in promoting his beliefs. Despite facing interruptions from protesters during his speech, Koch remained unfazed, viewing opposition as a sign of staying true to his convictions. With significant financial resources at his disposal, Koch continues to engage in political discourse and advocate for his principles, even as he passes the spotlight to his son, Chase Koch.
