Caves Of Qud, one of the most exciting development projects in PC gaming, hit 1.0 this week

This event took place on Thursday, but it was overshadowed by other less captivating news. However, I cannot let it go unnoticed: Caves Of Qud, the expansive and eccentric roguelike that has been in development for 17 years, has finally reached version 1.0. This update includes multiple endings, a revamped user interface, enhanced tutorials, and more.

The release of Caves Of Qud 1.0 has been refined with the assistance of publisher Kitfox, who is also known for their work on bringing Dwarf Fortress to Steam. While Caves Of Qud boasts a complex and detailed world, it is important to note that it has always been more user-friendly in terms of menus and controls compared to similar games. To assist new players, Kitfox collaborated with YouTuber SBPlaysGames to create an official beginner’s tutorial.

On Steam, the developers addressed the inevitable question of “what’s next.” After 17 years of dedication, they plan to take a break before continuing to update the game. Two major feature arcs are already in the pipeline, with the decision on whether they will be free updates or paid DLC yet to be made.

While I appreciate their ongoing commitment to enhancing Caves Of Qud, I also hope that Freehold Games will eventually shift their focus to a new project. It seems unlikely that we will see this level of dedication from the developers of Dwarf Fortress, but I am eager to see what the team has in store for the future.

It has been nine years since Marsh first explored the mutant-filled world of Caves Of Qud during its Steam Early Access debut. Now, Brendy plans to delve into Qud’s caves for a review before the year comes to a close.
