Carimara is a wonderfully grubby looking game about talking to Norman-folklore inspired creeps and exercising ghosts with cards

Fairytales are a beloved genre, but the classic Brothers Grimm stories with a twist have become a bit overdone. How about exploring folklore from Normandy instead? Carimara: Beneath the forlorn limbs offers a unique take on the fairytale genre, describing itself as a “short and creepy fairytale” that immerses players in a world that exudes a certain eerie charm. The game invites players to explore this world and encounter strange characters and objects, all while attempting to exorcise a ghost by answering questions using cards collected throughout the game. It’s a concept that promises an intriguing gameplay experience unlike any other.

The gameplay mechanics of Carimara are equally unconventional. As the titular character, players must gather cards by discovering various objects, people, and abstract concepts in the twisted world of the game. From simple items like acorns to enigmatic figures like creepy old ladies, there’s a plethora of things to uncover. However, not everyone you meet in the game will be interested in the items you collect, adding a layer of complexity to the gameplay.

The Steam page for Carimara maintains a sense of mystery, adding to the overall ambiance of the game. It appears that players will need to strategically use the cards they collect to elicit specific responses from characters in the game. However, navigating this task won’t be easy, especially when faced with a cast of seemingly unfriendly and sinister individuals.

What sets Carimara apart is the attention to detail in its design. Developer Bastinus Rex states that almost all textures and sounds are handcrafted, sourced from photos and recordings of the French countryside. This gives the game a unique texture and atmosphere, reminiscent of the landscapes of Felvidek. With a runtime of 30 to 60 minutes, Carimara promises a brief yet captivating experience. The game is set to release on May 22, and interested players can wishlist it on Steam.
