THQ Nordic and developer Bugbear have officially announced the upcoming release of Wreckfest 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the popular demolition derby racing game. The game is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, although a specific release date has not yet been revealed.

The trailer for Wreckfest 2 showcases a blend of in-game footage and CGI, depicting the story of a racer whose road rage leads to some unintended car destruction. While the trailer features gameplay footage, it primarily focuses on a rear-facing cockpit camera perspective, making it difficult to discern any major gameplay enhancements.

However, Bugbear has confirmed that Wreckfest 2 will feature a new ROMU engine for demolition physics and dynamic simulation, promising an even more intense and realistic racing experience. Additionally, a new sound system has been implemented, aiming to deliver one of the most immersive and accurate audio experiences in a racing game.

One of the standout features of Wreckfest 2 is the car customizer, allowing players to customize their vehicles by changing colors for different body parts, adding layered decals, and even simulating rust and body damage for a more authentic wrecked look. Players can expect a wide range of creative car liveries in the game.

In terms of gameplay modes, Wreckfest 2 will offer a mix of career, single-player, and multiplayer options, along with challenges and regular content updates post-launch. Bugbear has also confirmed that modding support will be available, as well as split-screen functionality for multiplayer gaming.

Wreckfest garnered widespread acclaim upon its initial release in 2018, receiving a 9/10 rating in our Wreckfest review for the original console launch. We praised the game for its successful blend of simulation and arcade racing elements, describing it as a visually stunning and thrilling racing experience. Bugbear continued to support the game with updates, including a significant upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S to enable 60FPS racing on consoles.
