California mom of 8, Maria Ramos, fatally shot on Oakland street by teen suspected of selling drugs
A tragic incident occurred in Oakland, California, where Maria Ramos, a mother of eight who had overcome drug abuse, was fatally shot in the middle of the road. The incident stemmed from her belief that a group of teens had sold marijuana vape pens to one of her children.
While visiting her mother in Oakland, Ramos and her mother noticed a Toyota suspected of selling drug-infused e-cigarettes near their home. Their intention was to confront the teens and ask them to stop coming to their house.
On August 7, Ramos and her mother approached the Toyota sedan filled with teens at the intersection of Hilton Street and Bancroft Avenue in Oakland.
Security camera footage captured the moment Ramos exited her mother’s vehicle and sprayed pepper spray into the teens’ sedan. Subsequently, two teens emerged from the car, with one pulling out a gun and shooting at Ramos.
As the tragic events unfolded, Ramos tried to escape while the gunman turned towards her mother, who managed to flee the scene. The gunman then got back into the sedan, which drove away.
Upon returning to the scene, Ramos’ mother found her daughter lying motionless on the road. Despite her efforts to revive her, Ramos tragically passed away, leaving behind her eight children.
“She was a cheerful person, a very lovable person to her and her kids. You know she was very lovable. She liked taking her kids out all the time. Her kids were her world to her,” Ramos’ mother said.
Ramos, who had successfully overcome her own drug addiction, left behind seven daughters aged between 1 and 15, and a 7-year-old son. Her family expressed deep sorrow over the senseless violence that took her life.
The family urged for a change in the lifestyle of the teens involved in the incident, highlighting the need for peaceful conflict resolution methods.
“They should change the way they live over here. We don’t have to be killing people for no reason, you know?” Ramos’ aunt expressed. “There’s another way to fix the problem. You have some problem with somebody, you don’t have to shoot nobody.”
The suspected gunman, a 16-year-old boy, was apprehended and charged with murder. Additionally, Isaiah Gomes, the suspected getaway driver, faces charges as an accessory to the shooting by Alameda County prosecutors.
The suspected gunman is currently held at Alameda County Juvenile Hall, while his name has not been disclosed due to his age.
