Business Travel Projected To Surpass Pre-Pandemic Levels In 2024

After the global recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, leisure travel bounced back quicker compared to business travel.

With remote work becoming the norm and many companies hesitant to send employees on non-essential trips, business travel saw a significant decline in 2020 and 2021. The revival of the business travel sector began in 2022 but faced a new obstacle as many companies implemented cost-cutting measures during an economic downturn, leading to a further decline in travel activity.

According to a recent report from the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), business travel is expected to reach record levels in 2024, two years earlier than initially predicted. The report, released at the group’s annual convention, highlights a 47 percent surge in global business travel expenditures in 2022 compared to the previous year, exceeding $1 trillion. Projections indicate a further 32 percent growth in spending within the sector for 2023.

Business travel spending is forecasted to exceed $1.4 trillion in 2024 after rebounding at a faster rate than expected just a year ago. By 2027, that amount is projected to rise to nearly $1.8 trillion according to BTN—Business Travel News.

These figures mark a significant change from the previous year’s GBTA report, which pointed out supply chain issues and inflation as obstacles to a real recovery in the business travel industry. It was initially expected to take until 2026 to see any tangible improvement.

The significant increase in business travel is attributed to pent-up demand, improved global economic conditions, and diminishing recession fears according to the organization’s research.

Despite the positive outlook, potential obstacles in the future include the growing use of virtual meeting platforms and a global emphasis on sustainability. Demand for business travel will be influenced by remote work according to GBTA CEO Suzanne Neufang.

Additional findings from the report reveal that air travel accounted for $183 billion (18 percent) of total business travel spending in 2022, lodging spending reached $395 billion (38 percent), food and beverage costs totaled $191 billion (19 percent), ground transportation accounted for $138 billion (13 percent), and miscellaneous travel expenditures summed up to $121 billion.
