Bungie has unveiled their latest game, Marathon, a team-based extraction shooter set on the world of Tau Ceti 4. The gameplay retains classic Bungie gunplay, but the art style is bright and cartoonish, featuring chunky 8-bit style fonts and glitching effects.

The game will support up to eighteen players fighting alongside AI enemies. Players can choose to team up in groups of three or play solo by opting out of matchmaking. The objective is to gather loot and escape; if you die, your loot will be dropped for others to claim. Accumulating more loot means a better loadout for the next run. Marathon will also include events, dynamic weather, end game content, community events, and seasonal stories. Players will have implants to enhance shields, agility, and other abilities.

Marathon is a crucial release for Bungie, especially after facing challenges with Destiny 2. The studio underwent layoffs post the launch of Destiny 2: The Final Shape, leading to the cancellation or reevaluation of several projects due to underperforming profits. This period threatened Bungie’s independence following its acquisition by Sony. With the future of Destiny uncertain after wrapping up its main narrative, and live service games facing risks, the gameplay reveal for Marathon holds significant importance.

Marathon is set to launch on September 23rd, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC.
