Borderlands 4 launching early has “literally 0%” to do with GTA 6’s release date, Marathon or anything save “confidence”, says Gearbox boss
Gearbox and Take-Two recently moved up the release date of Borderlands 4 from September 23rd to September 12th. This decision followed Bungie and Sony’s announcement of releasing their Marathon reboot on the original Borderlands 4 release date.
Contrary to speculation about strategic release dates related to GTA 6, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford stated that Borderlands 4’s early release is solely based on the game’s quality and development progress, not influenced by other game launches.
Pitchford faced criticism for his claims, with social media reactions questioning the true motives behind the schedule change. Meanwhile, the gaming industry continues to witness shifting release dates and uncertainties, with GTA 6 slated for a fall 2025 launch.
According to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, the company is confident in the planned release timing for GTA 6 despite industry challenges and delays.
