Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, football superstar Lionel Messi, late Defence Secretary Ashton Carter, and investor George Soros are among the 19 individuals selected by U.S. President Joe Biden to receive the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The award, which is the Nation’s highest civilian honour, will be presented at a White House ceremony on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
The White House stated that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other societal endeavors.
President Biden believes that these individuals have made America and the world a better place through their extraordinary leadership and contributions.
Hillary Clinton is recognized for her historic achievements in public service, including becoming the first woman nominated for President by a major U.S. political party.
George Soros, known for his philanthropic work through the Open Society Foundations, has focused on global initiatives that promote democracy, human rights, education, and social justice.
Lionel Messi, the most decorated player in professional soccer history, supports healthcare and education programs for children worldwide.
Other recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom include Fannie Lou Hamer, Ashton Carter, Robert Francis Kennedy, George W Romney, Jose Andres, Bono, Michael J. Fox, Tim Gill, Jane Goodall, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Ralph Lauren, Bill Nye, David M. Rubenstein, George Stevens Jr, Denzel Washington, and Anna Wintour.
The awardees will be honored for their contributions to various fields such as racial justice, national security, LGBTQI rights, conservation, entertainment, business, and fashion.
The ceremony will take place on January 4, 2025, at the White House.
