Most DNA kits promise to reveal a person’s ethnic origins using a cheek swab or saliva sample. They can show you what makes you unique and help you discover where your ancestors came from. You can also integrate this information with historical records services to expand your family tree.
After sending in your saliva sample, you’ll receive a detailed report and the opportunity to connect with distant relatives you may not have known about.
AncestryDNA deals and offers
AncestryDNA can provide estimates of your origins in over 350 regions worldwide, offering twice the geographic detail of other DNA tests (23andMe, for example, traces DNA back to 155 regions worldwide). It’s backed by the leading Ancestry genealogy service, which provides digitized historical records and is a great starting point for building your family tree.
AncestryDNA tests your autosomes (chromosomes shared with relatives on both sides of your family), providing less detail on ancient ancestors but sufficient information for most family historians. With over 10 million DNA results, finding relatives is more likely and the estimates are more accurate.
AncestryDNA kits are typically priced at £79/ US$99.
Ancestry offers up to £20 off (up to $100 off in the US) its family-tree services when you choose the 6-month plans (which complement its DNA tests). You can also take advantage of a 14-day free trial (UK) or Ancestry free trial (US).
23andme deals and offers
23andme has 10 million test results. Its main kit is called the Ancestry Service.
23andme tests three types of DNA (autosomes, yDNA, and mtDNA), providing more detailed information on distant ethnic ancestry compared to AncestryDNA. This broader DNA testing makes 23andme more accurate further back in time and can even reveal your Neanderthal heritage.
23andme recently added new populations in underrepresented regions in Asia and Africa, bringing the total number of tested regions to over 2,000.
The 23andme kit, known as Ancestry + Traits, is typically priced at £79/ US$99.
23andMe also offers a Health + Ancestry Service, which not only explores your family tree but also assesses your genetic health risks (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, Late-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, and Parkinson’s) along with Carrier, Wellness, and Traits reports. This service usually costs £149/ $199 and can be purchased directly from 23andme or through Amazon. The trait reports allow users to discover genetic links to certain behaviors and tastes, including fear of public speaking, preferences for coriander, and even musical pitch matching ability.
MyHeritage DNA deals
Similar to Ancestry, MyHeritage DNA tests your autosomes and has a database of 1.5 million tests. It’s typically priced at £79.
MyHeritage is currently offering 50% off its 6-month or annual gift membership, which includes unlimited family tree size and photo storage, access to a global collection of 12.6 billion historical records, and unlimited colorization and enhancement of historical photos.
Living DNA deals
Like 23andme, Living DNA (£99/US$99) examines your autosomes, yDNA from your father, and mtDNA from your mother. By testing more than just autosomes, Living DNA can identify centuries-old migration patterns, similar to 23andme.
Living DNA provides detailed visual representations of your origins, including specific sub-regions of the UK where your DNA may have originated from. Kits start at £49/US$49, and you receive free shipping when ordering three or more kits. US shoppers can find discounts at Living DNA US.
Living DNA also powers DNA tests for Find My Past (£79/US$89), a family tree service similar to Ancestry.
FamilyTreeDNA deals
FamilyTreeDNA provides a percentage breakdown of your origins, helping you identify where each DNA segment originates from. It also helps you connect with autosomal DNA relatives within the past five generations.
The Chromosome Painter tool uses colors to represent the populations in your myOrigins results, painting segments of your genome accordingly.
AncientOrigins is a feature that traces your origins back to ancient times by comparing your DNA to DNA from archaeological sites across Europe.
Kits start at $79 for the Family Finder DNA kit and ship worldwide. FamilyTreeDNA also offers Paternal ($119) and Maternal Ancestry ($159) kits, as well as a Family Ancestry + myDNA Wellness kit ($119) that provides over 30 Health & Wellness Insights based on your DNA.
