Bernie Sanders calls Harris 'pragmatic' amid attacks over her being too liberal

Self-described Democratic Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders Defends Vice President Kamala Harris’ Policy Shifts

Senator Bernie Sanders, a self-described Democratic Socialist, defended Vice President Kamala Harris against criticisms that she has shifted too far to the left in the past, describing her changing policy positions as “pragmatic.”

Sanders, representing Vermont as an Independent, stated that Harris has been recalibrating and making decisions based on what she believes is necessary to win the election.

During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sanders stated, “No, I don’t think she’s abandoning her ideals. I think she’s trying to be pragmatic.”

Sanders acknowledged that his own views differ slightly, emphasizing that many Americans, particularly rural and working-class individuals, feel disconnected from a government that they perceive as being influenced by big-money interests.

Harris has also defended her past policy shifts, emphasizing that her core values have remained consistent. However, she has faced criticism for reversing her stance on various issues, including bans on plastic straws and fracking, as well as healthcare and gun control policies.

Despite being ranked as the most liberal member of the US Senate in 2019, Harris has made recent moves towards the center on several key issues, such as tax policies and healthcare reform.

Sanders expressed support for Harris as a progressive, highlighting her efforts to address affordable housing and workers’ rights. While acknowledging their policy differences, Sanders believes that Harris can make significant progress in areas such as healthcare, even if they differ on approaches like Medicare for All.

While Sanders advocates for Medicare for All, Harris has a different approach towards achieving universal healthcare. Despite their differing views, Sanders believes that Harris can make substantial contributions towards progressive change in the country.
