Barack Obama joins Bluesky | TechCrunch

Bluesky, a new social network platform that offers an alternative to X and is built on open source technologies, has made a significant breakthrough by attracting notable users, including former President Barack Obama. The company recently confirmed Obama’s presence on the platform.

Responding to speculations about the legitimacy of Obama’s account on Bluesky, Bluesky OOO CEO Rose Wang affirmed its authenticity by commenting “Confirmed!”

In his initial posts on Bluesky, Obama commemorated the 15th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and emphasized the importance of fighting for progress. With a substantial following on other social media platforms like X and Facebook, where he has millions of followers, Obama’s presence on Bluesky is expected to draw more attention to the platform.

Obama’s message on the ACA anniversary resonates with the platform’s ethos of driving change through collective effort. His presence on Bluesky is a significant milestone for the platform and its growing user base.

On the other hand, X, formerly known as Twitter, has experienced a decline in users following the 2024 U.S. elections. Elon Musk’s involvement with X and his alignment with MAGA politics have led many left-leaning users to seek alternative platforms like Bluesky. This migration has contributed to Bluesky’s rapid user growth, with over 33 million users currently active on the platform.

Several U.S. politicians, including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Al Green, Gavin Newsom, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have already established a presence on Bluesky. Ocasio-Cortez, in particular, has reached a milestone by becoming the first user on Bluesky to surpass a million followers. The platform’s appeal to prominent political figures reflects its potential to become a key player in the social media landscape.
