B.C. Lions take a big bite out of winless Hamilton Tiger-Cats – Hamilton
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are struggling as they head into their first bye week of the Canadian Football League season, coming off a tough 44-28 loss to the B.C. Lions on Sunday night.
This defeat has left the Ticats with a league-worst 0-5 record in front of 20,210 fans at Tim Hortons Field.
Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. and receiver Justin McInnis were standout performers for the Lions, who now hold a 4-1 record. Adams threw for 383 yards and four touchdowns, while McInnis caught 10 passes for 144 yards and two scores.
The Lions took an early lead with a quick 77-yard drive resulting in a 45-yard touchdown pass from Adams to William Stanback.
After a slow start for the Ticats, Adams led the Lions to another touchdown with a 70-yard drive ending in a five-yard TD to McInnis.
Adams and McInnis connected for another touchdown early in the second quarter, extending BC’s lead to 24-1 with a field goal from Sean Whyte.

Hamilton managed to score their first touchdown with just over nine minutes left in the first half, as Bo Levi Mitchell found James Butler for a 32-yard score. Mitchell finished with 374 yards and three TDs.
However, BC quickly responded with a 69-yard touchdown pass to Alexander Hollins, dampening the Cats’ momentum. Hollins finished with six receptions for 116 yards.
Hamilton’s Liegghio and BC’s Whyte exchanged field goals in the third quarter before Mitchell threw a four-yard touchdown to Hakunavanhu for his first as a Ticat.
BC responded with a three-yard touchdown by Stanback late in the game. Stanback finished with 82 rushing yards on 14 carries.
The game ended with Mitchell connecting with Smith for a four-yard touchdown, but it was not enough to overcome the Lions’ strong performance. Butler had a solid game with 27 rushing yards and 108 receiving yards.
Hamilton’s struggles with penalties continued, committing nine infractions for 74 yards compared to BC’s five penalties for 55 yards.
The Tiger-Cats will look to bounce back on July 20 when they face the Toronto Argonauts at home.
