Amazon phasing out Freevee, but you can still watch for free

Amazon has announced the closure of Freevee, the ad-supported video streaming service that first launched in 2019 as IMDb Freedive before rebranding as IMDb TV and later as Amazon Freevee in 2022.

Freevee, which has been available as an app for mobile and TV, offering free movies and TV shows that could also be accessed through Amazon’s Prime Video platform, is undergoing changes.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Amazon revealed its decision to phase out Freevee over the next few weeks in order to provide a simpler viewing experience for customers.

The statement clarified: “There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a wide range of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select originals from Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, and a variety of FAST (free advertising-supported streaming television channels), all available on Prime Video.”

In essence, while the Freevee branding will be discontinued, much of its content will be integrated into Prime Video. This means that non-Prime members with an Amazon account can continue to enjoy free video streaming content, which will soon be labeled as “watch for free” on the Prime Video platform.

Although it may seem like a minor change, it remains to be seen how this transition will impact the quality and quantity of free content provided by Amazon in the future.

Current free content available on Prime Video (still branded as Freevee at the time of writing) includes Amazon originals such as Reacher, The Wheel of Time, and The Grand Tour, popular movies like Lethal Weapon, classic comedies such as The Three Stooges and Mr. Bean, as well as a selection of Christmas movies.

The update from Amazon will affect viewers in the U.S., UK, Germany, and Austria, where Freevee has been accessible.
