An Israeli airstrike on a school-turned-shelter in southern Gaza resulted in the tragic death of at least 25 Palestinians on Tuesday. The heavy bombardment in the north led to the closure of medical facilities in Gaza City, forcing thousands to flee in search of safety.
Israel’s recent ground assault in Gaza’s largest city is aimed at combating Hamas militants who are regrouping in areas that were previously thought to be cleared by the army.
After nine months of intense fighting, large parts of Gaza City and its surrounding urban areas have been devastated. While many residents had fled earlier in the conflict, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians still remain in the north.
Hakeem Abdel-Bar, a resident who fled Gaza City’s Tuffah district, described the situation as intense, with Israeli warplanes and drones targeting anything in motion and tanks entering central districts.
The airstrike at the school’s entrance claimed the lives of at least 25 individuals, including women and children, with the death toll expected to rise, as reported by Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Previous airstrikes in central Gaza also resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people, including women and children.
Israel has been targeting what it claims to be militant sites throughout Gaza since the conflict began nine months ago.
