Airbnb with huge shark plunging into roof faces closure after official backlash: 'Come while you can'

The owner of the famous Shark House, known for its 25-foot shark sculpture on the roof, is facing closure after a decision by Oxford Council.

Dr. Magnus Hanson-Heine, a UK resident, recently lost a planning appeal to continue using the property as a short-term Airbnb rental.

Despite no complaints from neighbors, Hanson-Heine believes the council is using his case as a test to shut down Airbnb properties in the city.

He is encouraging visitors to enjoy the unique property while they still can and plans to fight the closure for as long as possible.

Hanson-Heine’s father, Bill Heine, originally installed the shark sculpture without official permission in 1986. For the past five years, the property has been listed on Airbnb for short-term stays.

Following a complaint, the council has ordered Hanson-Heine to cease Airbnb rentals by March 11, 2025, a decision he believes will negatively impact Oxford’s tourism industry.

Hanson-Heine expressed disappointment in the council’s ruling and emphasized the importance of allowing homeowners to use their properties as they see fit.

He criticized the council for targeting his property and highlighted the positive reviews received from guests who stayed at the Shark House.

Hanson-Heine urged visitors to enjoy the property before it is forced to close, emphasizing the value it adds to Oxford’s tourism sector.

He questioned the inspector’s decision and argued that Airbnb rentals do not constitute a change of use under current guidelines.

Hanson-Heine criticized politicians for using his case to gain personal power and called the council’s actions a disservice to the community.
