Adding more fuel-efficient fleet will make it easier for airlines to achieve net-zero goals, BA

Jaideep Mirchandani, Chairman of Sky One, has emphasized the importance of fuel-efficient aircraft in India’s journey towards achieving long-term net-zero emission goals. He is confident that India can lead in the global aviation sector by embracing more sustainable practices, including the incorporation of modern, fuel-efficient planes into airline fleets.
Mirchandani highlighted the significance of aircraft such as the Boeing 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner in this transition. These aircraft are designed to significantly enhance fuel efficiency and environmental performance. “The introduction of more fuel-efficient aircraft like the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner is in line with India’s strategic objectives to achieve net-zero emissions in the future. Modern aircraft consume less fuel, emit fewer pollutants, and operate more quietly than their predecessors,” he stated.
For instance, the 737 MAX is projected to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions per seat by 14%, while the 787 Dreamliner can contribute to a 20-25% reduction in fuel usage and emissions due to its advanced technology and materials.
Boeing has identified India as a key market, with plans to deliver two aircraft per month to Indian airlines by 2024-2025. This includes various models such as the 737, 737 MAX, 757, 777, and 787 Dreamliner. Similarly, Airbus has secured significant orders, including a substantial 350-aircraft order from Air India, comprising 40 A350s and 210 A320 Family aircraft.
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, India’s annual air passenger traffic has exceeded 350 million, making it the third-largest aviation market globally. Mirchandani commended the Ministry’s sustainability initiatives, including the promotion of green energy at airports and the enforcement of carbon emissions monitoring. “These initiatives are crucial for a sustainable future in civil aviation,” he concluded.
