Actress Natasha Lyonne clarifies remarks after saying 12-year-olds should be able to get abortions
Actress Natasha Lyonne clarified her recent remarks in a post on X after suggesting that 12-year-olds should have the option to get abortions.
During an interview at the 40th Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California, Lyonne expressed her concern, stating, “When I think of the kids or like the 12-year-old girl that can’t get an abortion or something or you know it’s that that’s what really like rips me apart.”
In her post on X the following day, Lyonne acknowledged that her comments on 12-year-olds getting abortions were not her best, saying, “To clarify: I meant to say, that in many states now, if a young girl is raped, even by a family member, she would be forced to have that child against her will, or risk going to prison longer than her perpetrator.”
She continued, “And yeah, I think that’s about the darkest way to destroy a young woman’s life & autonomy & I say that coming from a place of first-hand experience. There is too much unnecessary & violent shrapnel happening to our most marginalized groups & total fear of reprisal in speaking up. Heck, I’m scared too.”
Lyonne, known for her roles in “American Pie” and “Poker Face,” expressed her strong aversion to violence in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Discussing her fear of mob mentality, she stated in her X post, “But more than fear of personal ridicule, I fear the unmitigated glee of mob mentality, the kind that leads too easily to dehumanization & the disintegration of our collective moral compass.”
She concluded with a reflection on the current state of affairs, emphasizing the importance of protecting the most vulnerable in society.
Speaking from personal experience as an abused child, Lyonne shared, “I guess I just don’t know how to stay silent despite the awareness that these days, it’s increasingly risky to be honest & can lead to muddled answers when caught off guard.”
Reflecting on the current political landscape, Lyonne commented on President Donald Trump, expressing her concerns about the impact on marginalized communities.
She concluded by quoting Childish Gambino’s “This is America,” emphasizing the ongoing challenges faced by these communities.
Fox News Digital reached out to Lyonne’s representatives for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.
