At its best moments, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is pure magic. There’s a lot of love in this game, but there’s also a few problems. These problems (trouble rendering textures and the like) tarnish an otherwise good overall impression.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is a fun but ridiculously frustrating experience. With solid visuals, new gameplay modes like aerial firefighting and on-foot sections, plus a range of customizable assist options, it makes for an exciting evolution of the series. However, its launch has been plagued by long load times, random crashing, and an eye-watering price tag for the all-inclusive Aviator Edition.

There’s not really a competitor, except Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, so what else are you going to do? It’s a gorgeous game and when it all comes together and you’re soaring over the Grand Canyon or crashing into the street in front of your house or doing low-level stunts in an F-18, it hits like nothing else.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 offers upgraded visuals, a bigger hangar full of aircraft types, and more detail all around. For some, the high system requirements and always-on need for a fast internet connection might be a deal breaker. Prior investment in a lot of third-party add-ons for the last edition might also warrant some caution.

Hands on: In spite of what can reasonably be described as a catastrophic launch, I’m already pretty much in love with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 – I’m just not blown away like I was five years ago, when I first found myself faced with the opportunity to fly to literally any place on Earth. That option remains, of course, and it’s been vastly improved by some smart new features, but it doesn’t have that same impact, either.
