Meta Quietly Rolls Out ‘Horizon Worlds’ Premium Digital Currency in US, UK and Canada
Meta has introduced a significant addition to Horizon Worlds by quietly launching its premium digital currency on the social VR platform in the US, UK, and Canada.
Roblox has Robux, Rec Room has Tokens, and now Horizon Worlds has Meta Credits, allowing users to purchase in-world digital goods from creators, such as avatar outfits and access keys to premium worlds. Unlike Quest Cash, Meta Credits can only be used to buy items within Horizon Worlds, not for hardware or accessories.
While this is a significant development, it does not mark the official beginning of the Horizon Worlds economy. Meta has been exploring monetization on Horizon Worlds since 2022, enabling users to buy digital goods directly with their local currency. However, Meta Credits (like all premium tokens) obscure the actual amount of real-world money being spent.
You can purchase packs of Meta Credits with various bonus amounts, or opt for the 10:1 conversion rate at the lowest 300 Meta Credit tier, which costs $3 without any bonus amount.
Similar to the initial rollout of Horizon Worlds, Meta is limiting the availability of Meta Credits to users in the US, UK, and Canada for now. Regions supported by Horizon Worlds still awaiting Meta Credits include Australia, New Zealand, most of Europe, and many countries in East Asia.
Meta states that parents or guardians of children aged 10-12 (age requirements vary by region) must authorize any credit card purchases, including the acquisition of Meta Credits, through a parent-managed Meta account.
Meta Credits cannot be transferred between accounts, meaning they are linked to your individual account—unlike cryptocurrency—and can only be used within Horizon Worlds, whether in Quest or its standard mobile app.
With the introduction of Meta Credits, Horizon Worlds is taking a significant step towards establishing a sustainable virtual economy. However, it remains to be seen whether this will be enough to attract creators (and users) away from more established ecosystems like Roblox, Rec Room, or VRChat.
Given Meta’s extensive reach, there is a strong possibility that we may see Meta Credit gift cards available at checkout counters as the Holiday Season approaches.
