What is Bluesky, and should you join?
X, now known as Bluesky, has been embroiled in controversy since its inception, with tensions escalating during the Elon Musk era. Many users are seeking a new social media platform, and Bluesky has emerged as a top contender. Following the reelection of Donald Trump in November 2024, over 1 million U.S. users flocked to Bluesky, propelling it past 15 million users and to the top of the App Store charts. The transition from X to Bluesky has been made easier with the removal of invite-only sign-ups.
But what exactly is Bluesky and how can you join? Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from the Twitter alternative, Bluesky.
What is Bluesky?
Unless you’re deeply entrenched in tech news, Bluesky might be a new name to you. Originating from parts of X in 2019, it didn’t become an independent company until 2021. Bluesky gained attention upon releasing an iOS app in February 2023 and an Android app in April 2023, positioning itself as a potential X alternative.
Bluesky operates similarly to X, allowing users to follow, like, and reply to posts. However, it differs in its decentralized structure, akin to Mastodon. This decentralized approach means multiple servers with varying moderation standards, promoting user autonomy. While the Bluesky Social server is available for all, users are encouraged to form their own networks, referred to as “applications.”
If the server system seems overwhelming, signing up for the Bluesky Social network simplifies the process.
Is Bluesky Legitimate?
Co-founded by Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, Bluesky boasts credibility. Dorsey’s vision for Bluesky reflects a departure from X’s centralized model, emphasizing user empowerment. The platform’s structure places moderation control in the hands of users and separate moderation teams, a strategic move considering X’s past moderation challenges.
While Bluesky is a legitimate social network, users should exercise caution as they would with any social platform.
Is Bluesky Owned by X?
Initially spun out from X in 2019, Bluesky operates independently from its parent company. While Bluesky maintains ties to X through key figures like Dorsey and former X CEO Parag Agrawal, it is not owned by X.
Is Bluesky Available for Android and iPhone?
Bluesky is currently available on both Android and iPhone. You can download Bluesky from the Google Play Store and Bluesky Social from the Apple App Store. Invite codes are no longer required for registration, making it easier to create a Bluesky account.
What Sets Bluesky Apart?
Bluesky offers unique features such as starter packs and mass block lists, aiding users in customizing their feeds. The platform is ad-free, a refreshing change from X’s ad-heavy environment. Bluesky prioritizes user control, allowing individuals to curate their feeds and enhance their browsing experience.
In essence, Bluesky empowers users by placing control of their news feeds in their hands, fostering a positive experience for all.
