Classic shooters Unreal and Unreal Tournament are now free and preserved on the Internet Archive

Epic Games has granted permission for their 1998 shooter Unreal to be hosted on the Internet Archive, making the classic sci-fi alien blaster available for free and ensuring its preservation for the future. They have also extended the same permission for Unreal Tournament to be hosted on the platform, offering the multiplayer game that led to the creation of numerous sequels in the early 2000s, including the iconic map Facing Worlds.

This recent decision by Epic was confirmed by fan group Old Unreal and reported by ResetEra. Old Unreal is taking the lead in facilitating the download and installation of these now-free games, making it easier for users. They have developed installers for Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament that streamline the process of setting up the games on modern machines.

Although Epic Games removed the original Unreal from Steam a few years ago, along with other Unreal titles, they have now made Unreal and Unreal Tournament freely accessible. This gesture towards game preservation aligns with recent efforts in the gaming industry, such as GOG’s commitment to making classic games playable on current PCs.

Unreal was a significant release in its time, showcasing impressive gameplay and graphics. The development team’s dedication, including long work hours and creative efforts, contributed to the game’s success. Now, with these games available for free, players can enjoy the nostalgia and excitement of these classic titles.

As the gaming community embraces initiatives for game preservation and accessibility, the availability of Unreal and Unreal Tournament for free download marks a positive step in ensuring these influential titles remain accessible to gamers of all generations.
