A tragic incident occurred in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, where a driver deliberately rammed his car into people exercising at a sports centre, resulting in the death of 35 individuals and severe injuries to 43 others. The shocking event took place on the evening of November 10, 2024, just before the commencement of the annual aviation exhibition by the People’s Liberation Army in the city.

The perpetrator, identified as a 62-year-old man named Fan, was apprehended by the police at the sports centre. Fan was found in the car with a knife and self-inflicted neck wounds, and is currently unconscious and receiving medical treatment.

According to a preliminary investigation, Fan’s actions were motivated by dissatisfaction with the division of financial assets during his divorce. The exact number of casualties and injuries remained unclear for nearly 24 hours after the tragic incident. However, reports indicated that more than 20 injured individuals were admitted to one of the hospitals in the city.

Efforts to search for information about the incident on Chinese social media platforms were met with heavy censorship on Tuesday morning. Despite the restrictions, videos of the aftermath circulated outside of China’s Great Firewall, providing a glimpse into the chaotic scene at the sports centre.

The sports centre, a popular recreational spot for residents, announced its temporary closure following the incident. This tragic event adds to a series of random attacks that have occurred in China in recent months, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and security measures.
