Michigan church fires beloved music director Fred Szczepanski after learning of his gay marriage, sparking outrage among parishioners

A Michigan Catholic Church Fires Beloved Music Director Over Same-Sex Marriage

Recently, Fred Szczepanski, affectionately known as “Mr. Fred” by churchgoers at St. Francis Church in Traverse City, Michigan, was terminated from his position as the music director. The reason behind his firing was his same-sex marriage to his longtime partner in Nevada in 2020, which came to light through an anonymous source who informed church officials.

Upon being confronted by Rev. Michael Lingaur after the discovery, Szczepanski confirmed his marriage and was promptly informed that his services were no longer required after serving the church for 34 years. Additionally, he was informed that he could no longer take communion during worship services.

The Diocese of Gaylord, Michigan, released a statement citing that Szczepanski’s marriage violated the ministerial agreement condition of his employment, as they believe marriage should be between one man and one woman.

Following his termination, parishioners at St. Francis Church expressed outrage, with some protesting and others renouncing their membership. Choir members went as far as wearing black, leaving their seats empty, and refusing to sing during mass in solidarity with Szczepanski.

Supporters of Szczepanski also organized protests outside the church, carrying signs with messages such as “Love Not Hate” and “Fired Not Retired.”

Despite the controversy, Szczepanski has found support at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse, where over 245 people attended a service to affirm and stand with him.

As Szczepanski navigates this challenging time, his husband, Bill Thompson, has set up a GoFundMe to assist with expenses such as insurance, legal fees, and bills.

While Szczepanski has not disclosed whether he plans to take legal action against his termination, he has found a welcoming community at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation.
