The Thing: Remastered artwork shown in developer deep dive

Nightdive Studios has unveiled a gameplay trailer for their upcoming retro remaster, The Thing: Remastered. This 2002 psychological action horror is set to make its way to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC later this year.

Being one of the more recent games to receive a remaster from Nightdive, The Thing is getting some impressive visual upgrades. Players can expect improved models, textures, and environments, along with new dynamic lighting and 4K resolutions running at up to 144 FPS, depending on the platform.

The team has also collaborated with the original developers to enhance the gameplay experience. One notable improvement is seen in the fear/trust system interface, which influences how AI characters interact with the player based on their psychological state. It’s known that Computer Artworks had to make some unconventional decisions to work within the technical limitations of the early 2000s, so it will be intriguing to see how this aspect has been adapted in the remaster.

While fear and suspicion play a central role in the game, players can also expect intense action sequences as they battle against the monstrous forms that The Thing has taken on.

The 2002 release of The Thing serves as a quasi-sequel to the renowned film by John Carpenter – a sentiment endorsed by the director himself. The game continues the story from where the movie left off, exploring various narrative threads that were left unresolved. Despite the positive reception, a sequel to the game was never realized, making this remaster a fitting tribute to Computer Artworks’ legacy.
