Elon Musk, a tech mogul who is the world’s richest person, invested over $70 million to support Donald Trump and other Republican candidates in the upcoming election, making him one of the largest donors to GOP causes this campaign season, as per recent campaign finance disclosures.

During the summer, Musk made the donation to America PAC, a super political action committee that he established in May to assist Trump in his reelection campaign. The America PAC quickly became a significant player in Trump’s election efforts.

“The America PAC is dedicated to promoting common sense, centrist values,” stated the founder of Space X and Tesla on his social media platform X, after the disclosure of his substantial contribution in a campaign finance filing.

Super PACs like Musk’s America PAC have the ability to raise and spend unlimited amounts of money but are typically prohibited from coordinating with the candidates they support. A recent ruling by the Federal Election Commission has allowed candidates and these high-spending groups to collaborate on ground game efforts, which involve mobilizing people to canvass and encourage voter turnout.

Despite the traditional responsibility of candidates and political parties to organize and fund such efforts, Trump’s campaign has faced fundraising challenges this year and has relied on external groups like Musk’s America PAC to carry out these activities.

America PAC has already allocated over $38 million towards voter canvassing efforts, according to financial disclosures.

A significant portion of America PAC’s funds have been directed to consulting firms associated with Phil Cox, a former aide to DeSantis and a previous executive director of the Republican Governors Association. Companies linked to Cox have received at least $21 million since August, records indicate.

Trump’s campaign has adopted unconventional strategies this year, including focusing on energizing Trump supporters who infrequently participate in elections, rather than targeting independent or moderate voters.

While Musk is the top donor to America PAC, other wealthy individuals, such as the Winklevoss twins, have also contributed significant amounts. The super PAC has spent nearly $80 million this year, with a portion allocated to support Republican House candidates.
