Iran’s foreign ministry summoned the ambassador of Hungary, the current president of the European Union, to denounce the bloc’s recent sanctions on Iran. The ministry expressed strong objection to the sanctions, stating that resorting to illegal and coercive methods such as sanctions against Iran is unacceptable and futile.

The European Union imposed sanctions on several Iranian officials and entities for their alleged involvement in transferring missiles and drones to Russia for use in its conflict with Ukraine. This included sanctions on Iran Air and individuals such as deputy defence minister Seyed Hamzeh Ghalandari and senior officials of the Quds Force.

Iran criticized the sanctions on its airlines as a violation of international law and defended its defence and military cooperation as necessary for national security. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen supported the sanctions, condemning Iran’s support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

The sanctioned Iranian entities and individuals are now subject to asset freezes and travel bans within the EU. Iran denied accusations of transferring weapons to Russia and highlighted the impact of existing U.S. sanctions on its economy.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced the suspension of indirect nuclear talks with the United States through Oman due to the chaotic situation in the region.
