Who is Magpie in HBO’s The Penguin?
You may have initially mistaken the giggling blonde woman in episode four of The Penguin for Harley Quinn, but the HBO series introduced a different DC villain cameo.
The cellmate of Sofia Falcone is Magpie (not Margaret, as she insists), a character well-known to comic book fans. But who exactly is Magpie? Let’s delve into the superhero lore to uncover everything you need to know.
Warning: Major spoilers for episode 4 of The Penguin below
Who is Magpie in HBO’s The Penguin?
In The Penguin, we don’t get much information about Magpie. We do learn that her case wasn’t as high-profile as Sofia’s and that she was rewarded with Bliss by the Arkham Asylum guards for her cooperation.
Magpie displayed an unusual fixation on Sofia, constantly referring to her as ‘Hangman’ and discussing plans to visit the garden together and celebrate life events. However, Sofia suspects that Magpie is colluding with the doctors and guards at Arkham to extract information from her.
Marié Botha portrays Magpie in the series, and her character meets a brutal end at the hands of Sofia.
Who is Magpie in DC’s comics?
Magpie, whose full name is Margaret Pye, made her debut in 1983’s The Man of Steel #3.
Initially a museum curator at the Gotham City Museum of Antiquities, Magpie’s exposure to valuable artifacts she couldn’t possess drove her to insanity.
She resorted to stealing these precious items and replacing them with replicas rigged with deadly traps, enlisting a gang of thugs to aid in covering her tracks.
In One Night In Gotham City, Magpie becomes the first DC villain defeated by a team-up of Batman and Superman, leading to her institutionalization at Arkham Asylum.
In Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, she escapes with the help of Poison Ivy but meets a grim fate at the hands of Tally Man II, acting on behalf of The Great White Shark. Her body is later reanimated as a Black Lantern during Blackest Night.
Magpie has appeared in various screen adaptations, including Beware the Batman, Gotham, and Batwoman, portrayed by different actors.
