Google says older Pixel Watches will get Wear OS 5 ‘later this year’

Google’s original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 recently received an update to the newest Wear operating system. However, Google had to pause the update due to complaints from users whose watches were affected by it. A new statement from Google suggests that it may take some time before Wear OS 5 is rolled out to all watches.

While some Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 units successfully updated to Wear OS 5, others faced issues such as a blank screen displaying a Bluetooth logo. The only solution was to perform a tricky reboot and soft wipe of the device, requiring users to set it up again. This situation has created a support nightmare for Google.

Google has announced that the software update will be fixed and released to the Pixel Watch and Watch 2 later this year, which could be around eleven weeks from now. The support page for Wear OS 5 provides instructions on how to reset the watch if it has been affected by the faulty update.

Some owners of older Pixel Watches may not be pleased with the less-than-ideal update to the latest OS, especially as the more expensive Pixel Watch 3 has been launched. Pixel devices are known for top-tier software support from Google, and a quick update to the latest Android version is expected. However, both Pixel phones and watches seem to be facing delays in receiving the latest software updates this year.
