Until Dawn's PS5 Remake is unnecessary but is undeniably frighteninglay

Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn has always held a special place in my heart. Originally released in 2015, the game appealed to my love for cheesy 80s slasher films. Until Dawn was a groundbreaking gaming experience, framed as an interactive drama with a butterfly effect system where choices significantly impact the characters and story outcome. Now, nine years later, Ballistic Moon has rebuilt the game on Unreal Engine 5 for PlayStation 5 and PC.

While some games benefit from remakes and remasters, such as Capcom’s Resident Evil series or the recent Silent Hill 2 remake, I initially had doubts about the necessity of a remake for Until Dawn. The original game was ahead of its time, featuring a strong ensemble cast and a unique gameplay experience that put Supermassive Games on the map. The remake raises questions about whether enhancing character movements, lighting, and adding a new score can truly enhance an already standout experience.

Until Dawn is now available on PlayStation 5 and PC, marking its debut on the PC platform. Priced at $59.99, the remake maintains the core narrative, butterfly effect system, and ensemble cast of the original game. Starring actors like Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, and others, Until Dawn continues to offer a cinematic and chilling experience, perfect for the Halloween season.

As a horror fan, I appreciate Until Dawn’s immersive horror elements and the improvements made with Unreal Engine 5. The enhanced audio mixing and new score add to the tension, creating a nerve-wracking atmosphere during intense moments in the game.

Until Dawn’s strength lies in its choice-based narrative, which sets it apart from other games in the genre. The performances of the cast, including Hollywood actors, contribute to the authenticity of the horror experience. The game’s inspirations from classic horror films are evident in its dialogue and overall atmosphere.

However, the PlayStation 5 version of Until Dawn does suffer from performance issues, including frame rate drops during gameplay and cinematic sequences. The remake also features some broken facial animations, which can detract from the immersion and create unintentionally comedic moments.

Despite these technical issues, Until Dawn remains a must-play for horror fans, offering a haunting and suspenseful experience. The remake may not offer enough new content to warrant a replay for existing fans, given its premium price tag.

With the anticipation of an Until Dawn film adaptation, the remake aims to engage new players and cultivate the fandom around the game. Whether the reception of the remake leads to a true sequel remains to be seen.
