Microsoft Defender VPN Detects Unsafe WiFi

In a recent announcement, Microsoft revealed that Defender now has the capability to detect and alert users about connecting to insecure public WiFi networks.

Microsoft Defender has been a trusted antivirus solution for Microsoft users for a long time. With the introduction of “Defender VPN,” users can now enjoy enhanced digital protection. This VPN feature allows users to secure their online traffic by routing it through Microsoft servers, making it an ideal solution for protecting connectivity on unsecured public WiFi networks.

The rollout of this feature began last year in select regions, including the US, UK, Germany, and Canada. While the availability is still limited, it is also accessible to Android and iOS users through the Defender security app, catering to a wider audience.

Prior to the update, Defender VPN primarily functioned as a regular VPN service. However, with the implementation of WiFi detection, users can now benefit from immediate privacy protection. The VPN automatically identifies and warns users about insecure WiFi networks, prompting them to activate the Defender VPN for added security on public networks.

Microsoft defines “unsecure” as WiFi networks with insufficient encryption. This feature is compatible with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS devices.

Additionally, the latest update for mobile users includes alerts for “unsafe” or suspicious WiFi networks.

Microsoft has plans to extend the availability of Defender VPN to more countries, with ten additional countries in Europe, LATAM, and Asia set to receive the service.
